We made an offer on a house in Querétaro and then had to get out of town to stop thinking about it. So we took a bus to Bernal, a small touristy town that boasts a big rock, la Peña de Bernal, with putatively magical powers.
We stayed in this hotel near the central plaza.
Good food here and next door at an Italian place, but we had trouble finding decent coffee the two mornings we were there. On Sundays the Punta del Cielo coffee house doesn't open until 11:00 am, and it is closed all day Monday. Mexican cafe de olla (coffee in a pitcher), which is all that was available before 11:00 on Sunday, is sweet and made with chicory. Ugh.
Here's the hotel's interior courtyard. Some of the (cheaper) rooms face it, others (like ours) face la Peña.
Here's the view from our room. As the tourist brochures point out, it is the third largest monolith in the world (and a New Age power source).
Neblina shrouded it Sunday morning.
A nice little vacation, and now we're happy to be home.
